Jurrjens picks up 9th win as Braves beat Rangers...

Jair Jurrjens Has Overcome Injuries to Emerge as Ace of Atlanta Braves' Staff, All-Star Candidate

Atlanta Hawks should not consider trading the experienced, defensive-minded Kirk Hinrich

As an Atlanta Hawks fan, I believe Kirk Hinrich has added another dimension to my hometown team and I hope he stays for another year or two here in Atlanta.

There is a role on this Hawks' team for Hinrich and it could be as a sixth man with the likely departure of the more expensive Jamal Crawford who had made nearly 11 million dollars a year for the 2010-11 season.

Hinrich has an expiring contract and is scheduled to be a free agent in 2012, but it may be easier and a little less expensive for the Hawks to sign the 6'4" guard to a one or two year extension. Hinrich is not the explosive and streaky scorer of a Jamal Crawford. However, Hinrich is still a capable three-point shooter and more of a natural point guard along with a better defender.

The surprising emergence of Jeff Teague in the playoff series against the Chicago Bulls has forced the Hawks to strongly consider that the second-year guard should be starting.

Even though Teague may start, Hinrich can play an influential and constructive role as a mentor. Additionally, Hinrich is capable of playing if there is an injury or if persistent ineffective on-court play inflicts Teague.

There's no surprise that Hinrich could garner interest from other teams, but Atlanta needs stability at the point guard position right now. Hinrich should be considered the Hawks' metaphorical insurance policy.

Back in early February, Hinrich was shipped to Atlanta in a trade that ended the brief, yet successful Mike Bibby era for the Hawks. Bibby was able to get the Hawks to a certain point due to his on-court leadership and three-point shooting.

Before Bibby, the Hawks had difficulty finishing games even with Joe Johnson already being on the team for nearly three years since his trade to the Hawks in 2005.

In the spring of 2008, Bibby's arrival helped to get the Hawks past that first hurdle and a 37-win Hawks' team made the playoffs in the 2007-08 season.

However, the 6'2" inch Bibby began to become more and more of a defensive liability on the floor and there was no way to really hide him against the opposition's more athletic and quicker players.

This flaw had been one of the reasons why the Hawks had been such a terrible match-up against the perimeter-dominated, but Dwight Howard based Orlando Magic team last season.

Hinrich's is a few years younger, but his defensive effort and effectiveness were vital in the Hawks moving past Jameer Nelson's guarantee and his Magic team in six games this past postseason.

I didn't like for the Hawks giving up young prospect Jordan Crawford, but Hinrich did provide a positive influence for this Hawks team and Hawks' management should make every effort to sign him to an extension beyond the 2011-12 season..
